How to Write a Five Paragraph Essay: Managing Your Time

One of the first things that students are taught to do with a sentence is to put it into a block which follows a certain line of thought and makes sense. That block is called a paragraph. When many of these blocks are grouped together, and all of them follow the same thought process or elaborate on a topic, the result is called an essay.

The basic format of the essay is the five paragraph essay that one usually follows. This format contains an introductory paragraph, three paragraphs for the body, and one for the conclusion. One will be surprised at how many times they will have to use this in their lifetime. The key to writing a winning essay lies not only in the content but also in its management. You do not have forever to complete the essay. As in everything else in life, essay writing also requires a certain amount of time management. Therefore, here are some tips to manage your time when you write a five paragraph essay.

Know your word limit, and set time apart accordingly

  • The ideal time required to write a 350-500 word essay is about 35-40 minutes. You can spend more time than that when you have it, but when taking an exam, this is the most you should spend on an essay that long. Thus, you should take only an hour to write a 1,000 word essay.

Make an outline

  • You are already aware of how a five paragraph essay is written. Therefore, drawing up an outline will not be hard.
  • Set apart five minutes, manage your thoughts, and jot them down.
  • Then, categorize them according to importance and relevance. Place the most important facts in the beginning, followed by the less important and the least important ones.
  • Now, all you have to do is to elaborate on the points you originally thought about. In simple words, you made yourself a skeleton, now all you have to do is add flesh.
  • Always spend more time on the introduction and conclusion:
  • All the best essays have interesting introductions and impactful conclusions. Thus, make sure that you spend a little more time on your introduction and conclusion than you do on your body.
  • This does not mean that you should ignore the body of your essay to make it a complete jumble. However, people’s attention spans are greatest during the conclusion and introduction of an essay. Therefore, your introduction and conclusion should be the most effective in your essay.
