Is College A Waste Of Time And Money

In the past century, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of people choosing to go to college. While college was once a privilege reserved for the sons of wealthy parents hoping for their offspring to enter medicine or politics; now, however, college has become a possibility for millions of potential students around the world. Unfortunately, this does not change the fact that college can put a serious financial strain on those who opt to continue their education. Often times, one must ask "Is college really worth it? Is it just a waste of time and money?"

While college can be incalculably beneficial, it is possible to become a success without earning a degree. There are numerous high paying jobs available to those who decide no to go to college, all it takes to find one is a little hard work. The average college course takes four years to complete, which is a lot of time and a lot of money spent of fees and equipment. If one should decide not to go to college, these four years could be spent climbing up the corporate ladder, earning more and more money with each step.

That being said, working in an office is universally recognized as a soul crushing occupation. Yes, the paycheck can be large, but is it worth the mental (and often physical) turmoil? Perhaps if you are the creative type, an arts course might be more suitable.

An arts course has financial advantages as it is available in a huge number of colleges, meaning one can "shop around" for the best price. Many creative people also sign up for college courses such as screenwriting or drama. These courses, however, are viewed by many people who have been successful in the respective fields as a waste of money and time; and it can get very hard to argue with them. Take a look at some of the names that never studied acing in college: Woody Allen, Samuel L. Jackson, even the legendary Charlie Chaplin. These all changed acting as a profession and yet none held a college degree for acting, Chaplin never even finished school.

It is impossible to give a definite answer to the question "Is college a waste of time and money?" The answer will vary from person to person. College may be entirely useless to me and yet be an absolute essential to you.
